How Much Is the R&D Tax Credit Worth?

Last reviewed October 14, 2026

The federal R&D tax credit is typically worth 6% to 14% of your qualified research expenses. The exact amount depends on which calculation method you use and your historical spending patterns.

Credit calculation methods

There are two ways to calculate the credit. You choose one each year on Form 6765:

Regular Research Credit — IRC §41(a)

20% of current-year QREs exceeding a base amount. The base amount uses your historical ratio of research expenses to gross receipts. For businesses claiming for the first time (no base period data), the minimum base is 50% of current-year QREs, yielding an effective rate of about 10% of QREs.

Alternative Simplified Credit (ASC) — IRC §41(c)(5)

14% of current-year QREs exceeding 50% of your average QREs over the prior three years. For businesses with no prior-year QREs, the credit is 6% of current-year QREs.

Examples by business size

Annual qualifying expensesEstimated credit (Regular, first-time)Estimated credit (ASC, no prior QREs)
$200,000~$20,000~$12,000
$500,000~$50,000~$30,000
$1,000,000~$100,000~$60,000
$2,000,000~$200,000~$120,000

These are simplified estimates for first-time claimants. Your actual credit depends on your specific base amount calculation. Use the free calculator for a personalized estimate.

What makes the credit larger?

Credit vs. deduction

The R&D credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in tax, not a deduction. A $50,000 credit saves you $50,000 in taxes. A $50,000 deduction saves you $50,000 times your tax rate (for example, $10,500 at a 21% corporate rate). Credits are significantly more valuable.

Payroll tax offset for startups

Qualified small businesses can apply up to $500,000 of the credit against payroll taxes each year. See Startup Payroll Tax Credit for eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average R&D tax credit for a small business?
It varies widely based on qualifying expenses. A small business with $500,000 in qualifying wages might receive $30,000 to $50,000 per year. The credit is calculated as a percentage of your specific qualified research expenses.
Is the R&D credit a one-time benefit?
No. You can claim the credit every year you have qualifying activities and expenses. Many businesses claim the credit annually as an ongoing benefit.
Can I carry forward unused R&D credits?
Yes. Unused credits carry forward for up to 20 years. C corporations can also carry credits back one year.
