How TaxCredit4U Calculates Your R&D Tax Credit
TaxCredit4U guides you through a structured process to determine your eligibility, enter your expenses, and calculate your federal R&D tax credit. Here is how the process works.
Step 1: Qualification screening
The process starts with the free calculator on the homepage. You answer questions about your business activities, and the software applies the IRS four-part test to determine whether your work likely qualifies:
- Business component test — Is the work related to a new or improved product, process, formula, or software?
- Technological uncertainty test — Was there genuine uncertainty about the method, design, or capability?
- Process of experimentation test — Did your team evaluate alternatives through a systematic process?
- Technological in nature test — Did the work rely on engineering, computer science, biological science, or physical science?
All four tests must be met. The calculator also screens for common disqualifiers such as funded research, post-production activities, and work performed outside the United States.
Step 2: Expense entry
After you register, you add your R&D projects and the people and costs associated with them. Expenses fall into three categories defined under IRC Section 41(b):
- Qualified employee wages — W-2 compensation for employees who perform, supervise, or directly support qualified research. You enter each employee's salary and the percentage of their time spent on R&D work.
- Qualified supply costs — Tangible materials consumed during the research process, such as cloud hosting, lab materials, or prototype parts.
- Qualified contract research — Payments to third-party contractors performing qualified research on your behalf. The platform automatically applies the 65% inclusion rate required by the tax code.
Step 3: Credit calculation
TaxCredit4U calculates your credit under both available methods and shows you the result of each:
Regular Research Credit — IRC §41(a)
The Regular Credit equals 20% of the amount by which your current-year QREs exceed a base amount. The base amount is calculated using your historical gross receipts and research expenses. For companies without adequate historical data, a minimum base amount of 50% of current-year QREs applies.
Alternative Simplified Credit (ASC) — IRC §41(c)(5)
The ASC equals 14% of the amount by which your current-year QREs exceed 50% of your average QREs for the three preceding tax years. If you have no QREs in any of the three preceding years, the credit is 6% of current-year QREs.
The platform recommends whichever method produces the larger credit for your situation. You are not locked into either method — the election is made annually on Form 6765.
Step 4: Documentation generation
When you submit your claim, TaxCredit4U calculates your credit and generates three documents:
- IRS Form 6765 — Pre-filled with your QREs, credit calculation, and all required line items. Ready to include with your tax return.
- Technical Narrative Report — A project-by-project analysis documenting how each qualifying activity meets the four-part test. This is your primary audit defense document.
- Finalization Letter — A summary of your credit amounts under both methods, with filing instructions for you or your CPA.
Step 5: CPA review
If you work with a CPA or tax professional, you can grant them access to the CPA review portal. Your CPA can examine the Form 6765, Technical Narrative, credit calculations, and all supporting documentation before you file.
What the platform does not do
- TaxCredit4U does not file your tax return. You or your CPA files the return with the generated Form 6765 attached.
- TaxCredit4U does not provide legal, tax, or accounting advice. The platform applies the rules of IRC Section 41 to your data.
- TaxCredit4U does not calculate state R&D tax credits. The platform covers the federal credit only.
- TaxCredit4U does not represent you in an IRS audit, though the documentation it generates is designed to support your claim if examined.
Frequently asked questions
- How does TaxCredit4U determine which employees qualify?
- You add each employee who worked on R&D and enter the percentage of their time spent on qualifying activities. The platform uses that percentage to calculate the portion of their wages included as QREs. Our team reviews the allocations and flags anything that may need adjustment.
- Can TaxCredit4U calculate credits for prior years?
- Yes. You can use the platform to calculate credits for any open tax year, typically up to three years back. Each year is calculated separately, and you receive a separate Form 6765 and Technical Narrative for each year. See Amended Returns for details.
- Has the methodology been reviewed by a CPA?
- Yes. TaxCredit4U's software and methodology have been vetted by a licensed CPA. The calculations follow the rules of IRC Section 41 and the applicable Treasury Regulations.
