R&D Tax Credit Calculator
Ready to estimate your credit? Launch the calculator — takes about three minutes, no account required.
The TaxCredit4U calculator walks you through the federal R&D tax credit qualification process and produces an estimate of your credit amount. It is free, requires no account, and takes about three minutes.
What the calculator checks
The calculator applies the IRS four-part test to determine whether your business activities likely qualify for the R&D tax credit under IRC Section 41:
- Business component — Do you develop or improve products, processes, formulas, or software?
- Technological uncertainty — Does your work involve uncertainty about the method, capability, or design?
- Process of experimentation — Does your team evaluate alternatives through testing, modeling, or systematic trial and error?
- Technological in nature — Does the work rely on principles of engineering, computer science, biological science, or physical science?
What expenses the calculator considers
The calculator asks for your qualified research expenses in three categories:
- Employee wages — W-2 compensation for employees performing, supervising, or directly supporting qualified research activities
- Contract research — Payments to third-party contractors performing qualified research on your behalf (included at 65% per IRC Section 41(b))
- Supplies — Tangible materials consumed during the research process (not general office supplies)
How the credit is calculated
The calculator estimates your credit under two IRS-approved methods:
Regular Research Credit
20% of current-year QREs exceeding a base amount derived from your historical gross receipts and research expenses. If historical data is unavailable, the base amount defaults to 50% of current-year QREs, producing a credit of approximately 10% of QREs.
Alternative Simplified Credit (ASC)
14% of current-year QREs exceeding 50% of your average QREs over the prior three years. For businesses without prior-year QREs, the credit equals 6% of current-year QREs.
The calculator shows the estimated range across both methods. When you start a full claim, the platform determines the best method for your situation based on your financial history.
What the calculator screens out
The calculator also checks for common disqualifiers:
- Funded research (work paid for by a client or grant where they retain the rights)
- Research conducted outside the United States
- Activities after commercial production begins
- Adaptation of existing products for a specific customer without technological uncertainty
- Surveys, market research, and social science research
What the calculator does not do
- The calculator provides an estimate, not a final credit amount. A full study with your actual records produces the precise figure.
- The calculator does not cover state R&D tax credits — it estimates the federal credit only.
- The calculator does not ask for employee names, SSNs, or sensitive data — it works with aggregate dollar amounts.
After the calculator
If your estimate looks worthwhile, you can create an account and start the full process:
- Upload your records (payroll, contractor invoices, project descriptions)
- You enter your R&D projects, employees, and costs
- The platform calculates your credit and generates Form 6765 and a Technical Narrative Report
- You or your CPA files the credit with your tax return
Our fee is 15% of the calculated credit amount. No upfront cost.
Who the calculator is for
The calculator works for any U.S. business that develops or improves products, processes, or software. Common industries include:
- Software development
- Manufacturing
- Engineering
- Biotech and life sciences
- Food and beverage
- Digital agencies
Startups with less than $5 million in gross receipts may also qualify to apply the credit against payroll taxes.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the calculator really free?
- Yes. The calculator is completely free, requires no account, and takes about three minutes. You receive an estimate of your R&D tax credit with no obligation.
- How accurate is the estimate?
- The calculator uses the same IRS formulas as a full study, applied to the aggregate numbers you provide. The estimate is a reasonable range — your actual credit may differ based on detailed expense classification during a full study.
- Do I need to provide sensitive information?
- No. The calculator asks for aggregate dollar amounts (total qualifying wages, contractor costs, supply costs) and basic business details. It does not ask for employee names, SSNs, EINs, or financial account information.
- What happens to my data after I use the calculator?
- If you provide your email at the end, your estimate is saved so you can return to it. If you don't provide an email, the data exists only in your browser session and is not stored on our servers. See our Privacy Policy for details.
